"Stone Fort Fencibles" - Original Digigraph Print
Fine Art Digigraph Print of Old Stone Fort at Bearskin Neck in Rockport, MA
Artist : James Morton
Old Stone Fort (1814), Rockport Old Stone Fort:
Site of fort erected by public subscription as a protection against British warships during the War of 1812. It was captured in a sneak attack and dismantled by British frigate Nymphe. Ammunition gone, all nine sea fencibles taken prisoner, the townsmen hurled rocks, using their stockings as slings. A plaque is located on the Historic Transit Tower building, which was built in 1892 on the site - now private residences. Stones from the fort were used in the harbor breakwater. The nine sailors represented on Old Stone Fort honor the captured naval militia or fencibles who provided coastal surveillance, protection and defense.
